It was after abandoning his literary studies at Harvard in 1992 that the young Matt Damon – who had taken acting lessons in his youth – went on stage for the first time for the play The Speed of Darkness, which had a certain hit.
He then embarked on the cinematographic adventure with a few extras, then secondary roles in Mystic Pizza alongside Julia Roberts, or in Geronimo by Walter Hill, before experiencing his first esteem success in Trial by Fire, sharing poster art with Meg Ryan and Denzel Washington.
But Matt Damon, who has not yet landed a real major role, then decides to start writing and calls on his childhood friend Ben Affleck. Together, they write the screenplay for what will become the film Will Hunting, the story of a young gifted mathematician who had a difficult childhood, and whose erratic behavior will lead him to meet a psychologist.
The film will be directed by Gus Van Sant, and the young actor will manage to keep the main role of his own story, when the studios insisted on hiring Leonardo DiCaprio. He will star a moving Robin Williams and the film will be a great critical success, winning the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay and The Golden Bear in Berlin.
Will Hunting will be a real springboard for Matt Damon who will then chain successful films, turning under the direction of great filmmakers like Steven Spielberg (Saving Private Ryan), Steven Soderbergh (the Ocean’s series) or Martin Scorsese (Infiltrators).
