Max Meyer is looking for a new job: The brutal case of the “world-class footballer”

Max Meyer is looking for a new job
The brutal case of the “world class footballer”

What is Max Meyer actually doing? Well, the 25-year-old is looking for a new club. And although the transfer window has been closed since Tuesday evening, it can still work. Because as a player without a club you can still be signed. What a bitter story.

Steffen Baumgart does amazing things at 1. FC Köln. He not only woke up the club with great emotions, which he triggers himself every minute of a football game. The new coach has also pulled players out of the hole in performance who were no longer expected to make a comeback at a high level. The best example: striker Anthony Modeste. Baumgart, however, has not dealt with any other football “miracle”. In his plans, he said in the summer, midfielder Max Meyer never played a role.

And so Meyer had no future at 1. FC Köln. His contract, which he had just signed in January this year, was not renewed. Meyer was released to look for a job. And the 25-year-old has not yet found anything. He is currently without a club. Incidentally, he shares this bitter fate with other big names. Among others with Gonzalo Castro (most recently VfB Stuttgart), with Shkodran Mustafi and Nabil Bentaleb. Both played for Schalke like Meyer once did. Aaron Hunt is also one of the biggest names currently looking for a new challenge.

Meyer has now reached the deepest valley of his fall, which began with his excessiveness as a FC Schalke 04 player. You know this strange story. For an extension of his contract, the player and his agent wanted more than the 5.5 million euros offered by the club in winter 2018. What got stuck in this extremely ugly story of greed, billing (allegations of bullying against the club) and suspension: The consultant’s assessment that his client is a world-class player who could be a regular in any top European team. So it was reported at the time.

At Crystal Palace things went steadily downhill

World class, it was a label that weighed heavily on the 25-year-old’s career. He certainly played a part in the fact that he couldn’t get on his feet in sports. The fact that his crash was accompanied by more and more ridicule and malice, on the other hand, is not fair. But fairness is not a category in which the local shit storms think.

He was never able to provide proof of international top class. Not at Schalke, where he probably had his best time under coach Domenico Tedesco in the 2017/18 season as a puller in central midfield, and not afterwards either. After that, that was the stations Crystal Palace and Cologne. In the Premier League he alternated between a sporadic regular and a grandstand guest. In his first season he played at least 29 league games, but only scored one goal and provided three assists, the games became fewer and fewer, the goal participation no longer took place. And not in Cologne either. With Effzeh there is a zero in both categories. He was only allowed to play over 90 minutes three times in his twelve games. His accomplishments? Solid, but nothing more. In the successful relegation against Holstein Kiel, rescue trainer Friedhelm Funkel completely renounced the playmaker in the first duel, in the second game he was only allowed to play when everything was decided.

How will the footballer continue? Completely unclear. A few days after his contract with Effzeh had expired, a rumor from Portugal popped up briefly. Sporting Braga is said to have been interested in Meyer. Nothing has happened since then. There is no speculation about a new employer. If there is something good about his situation, it is this: as a player without a club, he can still be signed by a new club after the transfer phase has ended. The bitter thing about his situation: He doesn’t have any good arguments. And since his bitter departure at Schalke, it also has a pretty bad image.
