Mean Girls: who is Renée Rapp, the interpreter of queen Regina George?

In theaters since Wednesday, “Mean Girls, lolita despite me” brings the cult comedy worn by Lindsay Lohan up to date. In the role of the pest Regina George, the general public discovers Renée Rapp, revealed by “The Sex Lives of College Girls”.

“On Wednesday We Wear Pink!” Fans of Lolita Despite Me will be delighted to find in theaters the spirit of this cult comedy from the 2000s in a new adaptation, musical this time, entitled Mean Girls, Lolita Despite Me. Indeed, after the success of Mark Waters’ feature film, screenwriter Tina Fey decided to bring the story to Broadway, where the play was a great success. With Mean Girls, lolita in spite of myself, we can say that the circle has come full circle since it is a cinematographic adaptation of the musical.

As a reminder, Lolita Despite Me featured a teenager who, after growing up in Africa, discovered a much more dangerous world: that of an American high school. In the 2024 version, Angourie Rice succeeds Lindsay Lohan in the role of the ingénue. As for her rival, Regina George, she is no longer played by Rachel McAdams but Renée Rapp.

A regular at musicals

Originally from North Carolina, the latter was a child with boundless energy and extreme sensitivity, who found in music a way to channel her emotions. Liking to stage herself, she distinguished herself in several high school musicals, to the point of winning for an adaptation of Big Fish the Jimmy Award for best performer, an American award given to high school students who practice musical theater.

She then distinguished herself in another production from her region, Spring Awakeningbefore becoming Taylor Louderman’s understudy in 2019 for the role of Regina George in Mean Girls on Broadway. When Louderman left the troupe a few months later, Renée Rapp officially became the interpreter of Regina George.

Music as an escape

In 2021, she landed her first on-screen role in the series The Sex Lives of College Girls, co-created by Mindy Kaling. As its title indicates, this program follows the sexual but also sentimental and friendly setbacks of a group of four students who live in shared accommodation on their university campus. Alongside Pauline Chalamet, Amrit Kaur and Alyah Chanelle Scott, Renée Rapp plays Leighton Murray, a self-confident and preppy young woman who discovers her homosexuality over the course of the episodes and learns to assume her identity.

Despite the success, the actress announced at the end of season 2 that she wanted to leave the series (she only appeared in a handful of episodes of season 3). It must be said that his schedule is already busy: after a first EP entitled Everything to Everyoneshe releases her first album in August 2023, Snow Angel, received favorably by critics. An album that she defends during a tour in America, then in Europe. She will also be in concert at the Olympia on February 13.

The young woman, who suffers from anxiety and who has never hidden her mental health problems, decided to make music her priority. The film and audiovisual industries being too stressful for her, Renée Rapp found the balance she needed in music and announced that she did not want to return to film sets.

Mean Girls is perhaps the only opportunity you will have to see Renée Rapp on the big screen. See you in theaters, where the film was released on January 10.
