MediaTek unveils the Dimensity 1300, a new 5G SoC for the midrange

2

MediaTek has just formalized its Dimensity 1300 and hopes to remain competitive in the mid-range smartphone segment. The opportunity to look at a promising chip.

MediaTek is part of the club of the largest semiconductor manufacturers in the world and intends to continue to expand its influence on the smartphone market. The Taiwanese company has just presented the Dimensity 1300, a promising mid-range SoC, supposed to face an equivalent product like the excellent Snapdragon 778G from the American Qualcomm.

This octa-core chip uses a 6nm etching process from TSMC. It works with four Cortex-A78 cores (one “Ultra” clocked at 3 GHz and three “Super” at 2.6 GHz) and four Cortex A-55 at 2 GHz. The graphics part is provided by nine Mali-G77 MC9 cores.

A solid technical sheet

On paper, the Dimensity 1300 can support screen refresh rates of up to 168 Hz for a Full HD+ display (2520 x 1080 pixels maximum). It can be paired with 16 GB of LPDDR4x RAM and supports the UFS 3.1 standard for storage. 5G, wifi 6 and Bluetooth 5.2 are obviously in the game.

The chip is equipped with an ISP that is supposed to greatly improve image processing, especially for night shots. The founder promises a marked improvement in the management of the dynamic range. It also supports sensors up to 200 Mpx (provided there is only one) and allows filming in 4K HDR. MediaTek also highlights the support for video in multi-portrait mode, allowing to generate a bokeh effect on several people simultaneously.

For video games, the company relies on its Hyper Engine 5.0 suite, which is supposed to offer improved graphics, but also better stereo management with wireless headphones.

The firm has not communicated on the first devices to be equipped with it, but it is possible that the OnePlus Nord 3 is one of them. Anyway, the chip will have a lot to do to compete with Qualcomm’s 7 series, which has proven to be particularly effective on smartphones like the Samsung Galaxy A52s 5G, the Motorola Edge 20 or the Realme GT Master.
