Blinken stays away from G7 due to corona infection

US Secretary of State Blinken was supposed to meet his G7 counterparts at Schlossgut Weissenhaus in Schleswig-Holstein next week. Now he has to cancel the trip because his corona test was positive.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken will not be traveling to the G7 foreign ministers meeting in Germany next week due to a corona infection. The 60-year-old had a positive corona test on Wednesday, according to his ministry. The minister was fully vaccinated and boosted against the virus and had “only mild symptoms”. Blinken has also not met President Joe Biden in the past few days, so the President is not considered a contact person.

The Foreign Secretary will now isolate at home and work from there. This means that trips to Morocco and Germany planned for the coming week are also cancelled. The Federal Foreign Office is organizing a G7 foreign ministers’ meeting at Schlossgut Weissenhaus in Schleswig-Holstein from 12 to 14 May.

In the past few weeks, several high-ranking members of the US government have been infected with the corona virus. The last time it hit Vice President Kamala Harris, who has since tested negative again, was at the beginning of last week.

Blinken attended the White House Correspondents’ Evening Gala in Washington on Saturday. Comedian Trevor Noah, who spoke at the dinner, jokingly referred to a “super spreader” event.
