After an eight-year break, Meg Ryan returns to the big screen. Now she explains the reason for her long break.

Eight years after her last film, Meg Ryan’s (61) return to the screen is imminent with the rom-com “What Happens Later”. The actress can be seen in the romantic comedy from November 3rd alongside David Duchovny (63). What’s behind her long break from acting Ryan has now explained to “People” magazine.

Meg Ryan wanted to focus on other parts of her life

“I took a huge break because I felt like I wanted to develop so many other parts of my experience as a human being,” Ryan said. For example, the role as mother of her two children: Jack (31), who comes from her relationship with Dennis Quaid (69), and Daisy (18), whom the actress adopted in 2006.

With the films “Harry and Sally” (1989) and “Sleepless in Seattle” (1993), Ryan cemented his status as the eternal queen of romantic comedies in the 1990s. But as her popularity grew, the urge to withdraw from the spotlight also grew. It’s nice to see acting “as a job and not as a lifestyle,” she explains. “For me, that’s a good way to navigate it.”

The idea for “What Happens Later” came to her during lockdown

Ryan, who also worked as a screenwriter and director for “What Happens Later,” made the decision to work on a film again during the corona pandemic. “The idea came to me during lockdown,” said the 61-year-old. “At its core, it’s about two people who are tied to each other.”

The film is about two ex-lovers who get snowed in together in a small airport due to a snowstorm. The film is “magical,” explains the actress. “It’s a roller coaster ride between these two people and begs the question: Will they get back together or not? These are two people who broke each other’s hearts a long time ago.”
