Targeted by a violent column published in the pages of the Sun on December 18, Meghan Markle received a public apology from the newspaper, after a record filing of 20,000 complaints.
The editorial has brought many readers out of its hinges. Last Sunday, journalist Jeremy Clarkson took up his pen to pour out his hatred of Meghan Markle in the pages of the Sun, not failing to humiliate the Duchess in the process. “I hate her. (…) At night, I can’t sleep and I lie there, grinding my teeth and dreaming of the day when she will be paraded naked through the streets of every city in the UK, while the crowds scream Shame! and throw excrement on him“, he wrote. Comments described as outrageous for many readers, who denounced the exit from the road of Jeremy Clarkson. The Sun then removed the article from its site and its archives, before the author of the vitriolic editorial cannot be explained on Twitter. “Oh my God. I rather put my feet in the dish. In an article I wrote about Meghan, I made an awkward reference to a scene from Game of Thrones and it turned out badly for a lot of people. I am horrified to have caused so much harm and will be more careful in the future“, declared the journalist. If there is indeed a scene of this kind in the series Games of Thrones, the words of Jeremy Clarkson remain inexcusable for a large part of the public, which is why the Sun wished to apologize publicly for allowing the publication of such a column.”Columnists’ opinions are their own, but as a publisher, we understand that with free expression comes responsibility, wrote the newspaper this December 23 on its site. “We at the Sun regret the publication of this article and are sincerely sorry“.

Jeremy Clarkson was also able to overlook the support of his own daughter, Emily, a podcaster who campaigns against online abuse. “My opinions are and always have been clear when it comes to misogyny, bullying and the treatment of women by the media“, declared the young woman on her Instagram account before adding: “I want to make it very clear that I’m against everything my dad wrote about Meghan Markle and I will continue to support those targeted by online hate.” It promises at Christmas dinner…
