In the remaining Australian Open round of 16 games, the top 4 10 players advance to the round of 8.

The round of 16 of the bottom half of the tableau

  • Stefanos Tsitsipas (GRE/ATP 4) sees Taylor Fitz (USA/ATP 22) 4: 6, 6: 4, 4: 6, 6: 3, 6: 4
  • Daniil Medvedev (RUS/ATP 2) sees Maxime Cressy (USA/ATP 70) 6:2, 7:6, 6:7, 7:5
  • Félix Auger-Aliassime (CAN/ATP 9) see Marin Cilic (CRO/ATP 27) 2: 6, 7: 6, 6: 2, 7: 6
  • Jannik Sinner (ITA/ATP 10) sees Alex De Minaur (AUS/ATP 42) 7: 6, 6: 3, 6: 4

Around 3.5 hours of hard work stood between the 3rd quarter-final entry in Melbourne and Stefanos Tsitsipas. For the strong-nerved Greek, the game against Taylor Fritz, who made his debut in the round of 16, turned into a rollercoaster ride with a “happy ending”. At the origin of his hard-fought victory was the break in the 4th set at a score of 4: 3 from Tsitsipas’ point of view. With the breakthrough in service, the fourth in the world rankings paved the way to equalizing sentences and left a more active impression from then on. Nevertheless, the US outsider withstood the pressure in the 5th round up to 4:4, but then had to let the serve be stolen one last and decisive time.

  • Gaël Monfils – Matteo Berrettini
  • Denis Shapovalov – Rafael Nadal
  • Jannik Sinner – Stefanos Tsitsipas
  • Félix Auger-Aliassime – Daniil Medvedev

The nominal tournament favorite Daniel Medvedev is in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open after a 4-set win over Maxime Cressy. The Russian started the game without any problems against the American, but after a quick opening set in his favour, he increasingly had problems with the outsider’s game. Again and again Cressy looked for the way to the net, which forced the second in the world rankings to make mistakes. In the 2nd and 3rd round, Medvedev therefore had to take a detour via the tie-break, where the Russian had to accept a 4:7 after the 7:4 and thus had to hand over the 3rd set to Cressy, who was not seeded. After exactly 3.5 hours, Medvedev decided the game with a forehand winner and thus prevented another tie-break decision.

With Felix Auger-Aliassime Another top 10 player gave up a set in his round of 16 duel. The Canadian failed to start the game against Marin Cilic: The reaction to the 2:6 was 7:6, with Auger-Aliassime only bringing the Croatian to his knees with 9:7 in the tie-break. The momentum was on the 21-year-old’s side, who then went 6-2 in his favor in the third set. Cilic was only able to keep up in the last round, but – again after a tie-break – had to admit defeat 6:7 (4:7). This match even lasted 5 minutes longer than Medvedev’s. In the quarterfinals there is now a direct duel between Auger-Aliassime and the Russian.

Finished in the last 8 at a Grand Slam for the second time Jannik Sinner. The only 20-year-old Italian showed no trouble against the Australian Alex De Minaur and reached the quarter-finals in around 2.5 hours without losing a set. After a hard-fought start with a 7:6 in favor of Sinners in the starting set, the tenth in the world rankings was followed by a 6:3. In the 3rd round, the youngster used his 1st match point on the center court when the score was 5: 4. In his 1st quarter-final in Melbourne, Sinner meets Tsitsipas (GRE/ATP 4).
