As in 2017, Jean-Luc Mélenchon announced that he would consult his base in the event of a Macron-Le Pen duel in the second round of the presidential election. An instruction without prior consultation, “it would be absolutely useless. People do as they please, we all know that”.

Jean-Luc Mélenchon would consult the some 310,000 people who supported him online in the event of a duel between Emmanuel Macron and Marine Le Pen in the second round of the presidential election, before giving instructions, in an interview with Telegram published on Wednesday.

“310,000 people sponsor my candidacy”

Asked about a possible voting instruction in the second round, the LFI candidate, third man in the polls, replied: “310,000 people are sponsoring my candidacy. So on the evening of the first round, we will ask them what we are doing for the second tower”. Jean-Luc Mélenchon adds: “But it will be easier because I have a good chance of being there”. An instruction without prior consultation, “it would be absolutely useless. People do as they please, we all know that”.

He had already done so in 2017, when he finished fourth with 19.58% of the vote, contenting himself with saying: “Not a vote on the far right”. The consultation had resulted in a short majority for the blank or null vote (36%), just ahead of the vote for Emmanuel Macron (nearly 35%).
