  • Noah Lyles successfully defends his 200m title at the World Championships in Eugene.
  • The American achieves a dream time of 19.31 seconds.
  • Silver and bronze also go to the USA, as in the 100m.

On the 7th day of the World Championships in Athletics, Noah Lyles provided the perfect conclusion from the perspective of the home crowd. The 25-year-old managed an absolute dream run in the final over 200 m. In 19.31 seconds, he not only stormed to gold in a superior manner, but also broke the US record set by Michael Johnson (1996/19.32).

Only world record holder Usain Bolt (19.19) and his Jamaican compatriot Yohan Blake (19.26) had previously run faster than Lyles at Hayward Field. “Everyone dreams of this day. And today is my day. I’ve finally been able to do what I’ve dreamed of for years,” Lyles said over the stadium mic.

USA clear away all medals again

Lyles’ triumph was made all the sweeter for the home crowd as the Florida man also took silver and bronze to the USA. Kenneth Bednarek (19.77) and Erriyon Knighton (19.80) made the US triple victory perfect. 18-year-old Knighton became the youngest sprinter ever to win a World Championship medal over this distance. In Tokyo he had just missed out on a medal in fourth place.

As in the 100 m, the Americans also achieved a triple victory in the 200 m. World 100m champion Fred Kerley was knocked out in the semifinals over 200m.
