Men’s slalom in Saalbach – Meillard just off the podium in Haugan’s premiere victory – Sport

The Valaisian took fourth place in the World Cup final. The Norwegian Timon Haugan celebrated his first World Cup victory. Marco Rochat comes 6th.

The podium

  • 1. Timon Haugan (NOR) 1:54.00 minutes
  • 2. Manuel Feller (AUT) +0.40 seconds
  • 3. Linus Strasser (GER) +0.44

In the last slalom of the winter, Timon Haugan achieved a double premiere. The 27-year-old celebrated his very first World Cup victory at the World Cup final in Saalbach Hinterglemm. Haugan confidently defended his half-time lead on the difficult slope. At the same time, he ensured that a Norwegian reached the top of the podium across all disciplines for the first time this winter.

Haugan thus prevented a home win: Manuel Feller, who had already secured the small crystal ball in the slalom before the race, gained 2 places and reached the podium for the 5th time this season. The Austrian was not ranked lower than 5th in any of the 10 slaloms. Feller’s biggest competitor, Linus Strasser, completed the podium.

The other Swiss

Loïc Meillard also demonstrated his impressive form in the last technical race. The Valaisan was only 11 hundredths short of his fifth podium finish in a row. Meillard, in third place after the first run, had to let Feller pass in the second run. Nevertheless, the 50 points collected could still be worth gold in the fight for second place in the overall ranking.

Marc Rochat confirmed that he has definitely become a consistent top driver this season. The 31-year-old from Vaud made it into the top 10 for the 5th time. Luca Aerni was able to gain 4 places in the 2nd run and still collect World Cup points. Daniel Yule, on the other hand, who lost 3 places, came away empty-handed as only the top 15 get points at the World Cup final.

The slalom debutant

A total of 5 Swiss took part because Swiss-Ski had Lenz Hächler, the junior world champion in this discipline. The 21-year-old from Zug was able to get a taste of World Cup air, as he did last December when he took part in the giant slalom in Alta Badia (out in the first run). Now the premiere in the slalom among the “big ones” followed. But as in Italy, Hächler did not finish the race and was eliminated after a threader in the first round.

This is how it continues

The season is over for the technicians. At the end of the World Cup final in Salzburgerland, the speed races are on the agenda. The Super-G takes place on Friday, followed on Sunday by the downhill as the last race of the World Cup winter.
