On Europe Matin Thursday, MEP LR François-Xavier Bellamy, announced exclusively that he will sponsor Éric Zemmour for the presidential election. The Reconquest candidate, like Marine Le Pen and Jean-Luc Mélenchon, has still not gathered the required number of signatures to run.
Marine Le Pen, Eric Zemmour or even Jean-Luc Mélenchon have still not met their 500 sponsorships required to participate in the presidential election. They have until March 4 to submit their list to the Constitutional Council. Invited to Europe Matin on Thursday, MEP LR François-Xavier Bellamy, announced exclusively that he will sponsor Éric Zemmour for the presidential election. “I have decided to give my sponsorship to Éric Zemmour,” he said.
Bellamy’s appeal to elected officials who did not give their sponsorship
“I take my responsibilities because we can’t just see the problem and not respond to it. We can’t just make calls so I decided to grant my sponsorship to Éric Zemmour. This is the candidate who is the furthest behind in the quest for sponsorships today and not only will I do so, but I also call on all elected officials who still have a sponsorship today to absolutely react to prevent the major democratic crisis that we will experience tomorrow if we were in a situation of lasting blockage”, asked the MEP LR.
He notably cited David Lisnard, who made the choice to sponsor Jean-Luc Mélenchon, or even François Bayrou and Jean Castex. “We see that they are concerned about this situation and basically I believe it is time to act because we are a few days from the deadline,” he recalled.
Zemmour rather than Macron in the second round
François-Xavier Bellamy also clarified that this sponsorship of Éric Zemmour does not mean joining the candidate’s Reconquest party. “I will not be one of those who jump ship when it faces headwinds,” he said. “My sponsorship is not worth support, I am committed – within LR – and I will keep this loyalty in my political family. In addition, MEP LR acknowledged that if Éric Zemmour is opposed to Emmanuel Macron in the second round, he will give his vote to the former polemicist. “I will do as others have indicated, in particular Éric Ciotti. I believe that Emmanuel Macron has deeply damaged our country and our democratic life and we absolutely need to turn the page on five years of Macronism.
