Karl Lagerfeld passed away in 2019. The designer will be honored posthumously at the Met Gala 2023, also with an exhibition.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art has announced the theme of the Met Gala for the coming year: the works of the German designer Karl Lagerfeld, who died in 2019, will then be honored. This was done, among other things, on Instagram announced.

The annual benefit event takes place in New York on the first Monday in May, i.e. May 1st in 2023. Numerous invited celebrities appear there in unusual outfits, the event is also considered a “fashion Oscar”. After the event, there will be an exhibition in 2023 called Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty, which will be on view from May 5 to July 16.

150 exhibits

Lagerfeld’s first designs came out in the 1950s. His last collection – after a nearly seven-decade career – appeared in 2019. The Met exhibition features around 150 garments and sketches from Lagerfeld’s time as creative director at several major labels, including Chloé, Fendi and Chanel, as well as his label Karl Lagerfeld.

The exhibition will “unveil his unique artistic practice and invite the public to experience a significant part of Lagerfeld’s boundless imagination and passion for innovation,” according to US media reports in a statement about the exhibition.
