Meta and LG would like to challenge Apple with a Quest Pro 4 costing… very expensive, too

A Korean media reports that Meta and LG are currently collaborating on the design of a mixed reality headset capable of competing, by 2025, with the Apple Vision Pro.

To offer a less expensive alternative to the Apple Vision Pro as soon as possible. This is obviously the objective of Meta, which would therefore have decided to join forces with LG to speed up the development process of what could well be the Meta Quest Pro 4. Expected in 2025, this new helmet would be offered to more or less $2,000, according to information from the Mail Business Newspaper. As a reminder, the Apple Vision Pro is announced from 3,500 dollars and should arrive on the market in early 2024.

Meta and LG in cahoots to compete with Apple

For context, Meta is expected to launch its Meta Quest 3 in the coming weeks at a price of $499. The firm should also launch, during 2024, an entry-level model which would replace the Quest 2 at a price of around 200 dollars this time. The latter had already been mentioned by rumors and would currently respond to the code name “Ventura”.

The helmet developed with LG would for its part be focused on the very high end and would adopt, as we have said, the name of Quest Pro 4… breaking in passing with the usual numbering of Meta in terms of AR / VR helmets (until now, the brand numbered its “Quest” and “Quest Pro” line-ups separately, recalls The Verge).

If this Quest Pro 4 is well launched at 2,000 dollars as reported by the Maeil Business Newspaper, we would then be dealing with a headset twice as expensive as the current Meta Quest Pro, launched at 1,499 dollars a few months ago, then repositioned at 999 dollars by Meta. A colossal price, certainly, but much lower than that requested by Apple for its Vision Pro.

A top-of-the-range helmet that is still very mysterious

Note that this would not be the first time that Meta has launched a virtual or augmented reality headset developed in collaboration with another manufacturer. As pointed out The Verge, the Oculus Rift S thus bore the Lenovo brand, while the Oculus Go was in its time manufactured by Xiaomi. A partnership between Meta and LG for the design of a new high-end headset would therefore not be far-fetched.

Still, at this stage we ignore almost everything about this famous $2,000 headset developed by Meta and LG. Mark Zuckerberg’s group had presented its Quest Pro as a kind of testing ground dedicated to the most innovative VR technologies, explaining that these would later arrive on more affordable models. We do not know that says how innovative this helmet would be, but it is clear that it will have to be to hope to compete with the Apple Vision Pro.
