Meta Quest 3 finally unveiled and ready to bury PSVR 2

The Meta Quest 3 has finally come to the fore and is already shaping up to be a tenor of VR. Prices, new technologies, presentations… we go around.

We knew that 2023 was going to be an eventful year when it came to gaming. The big releases are legion and the announcements very numerous. But in the VR market, a lot of things are also changing. After the release of Sony’s monster, the PSVR 2, last February, it is now the Meta group (formerly Facebook) which is entering the dance. The giant has just presented its Meta Quest 3 to the whole world, and it could hurt.

The MQ2 has a little brother

Facebook (Meta) and VR is a long love story. With the Oculus, the group quickly launched into virtual reality with the desire to make it accessible to everyone. This is where the Oculus Quest range was born, now called Meta Quest. Affordable VR headsets compared to the generally more high-end focused competition. As a bonus, the Quests often offer new technologies. The latest, the MQ 2, for example, is totally independent. Able to run on its own without needing to be connected to a PC. It can nevertheless be supported by a machine to take advantage of its power and thus offer an even more immersive experience. The icing on the cake, this autonomous headset can now connect without any wires, simply via Wi-Fi.

The Meta Quest 3 looks pretty crazy

These technologies will be found in the Meta Quest 3 alongside new features such as a complete redesign of the helmet. The latter will now be lighter than ever and much more compact. It will keep its ultra-light strap system as a headband and will once again have fleece fabric to cover the edge of the eyes and ensure comfort and total immersion. The precise spec sheet hasn’t been revealed yet, but it’s said that the headset will be twice as good overall as the Meta Quest 2, based on a Qualcomm-signed Snapdragon chip.

We will have to wait a little longer before having all the details, but the Meta Quest 3 promises to be more immersive than ever. In particular, it will support an augmented reality system, allowing neither more nor less to show the games directly in your space. A video presents a board game directly placed on the living room table. Something to dream about, it remains to be seen how this famous Meta Reality technology will be used.

The PSVR 2 has to worry?

Always with a view to remaining affordable, the Meta Quest 3 will be offered at a “low price” compared to the competition. On its official website, this standalone headset is displayed at an introductory price of €569.99. Or about 30 € less than a PSVR 2. It remains to be seen what it has in the belly compared to its competitor. As a reminder, the PSVR 2 offers a panel capable of displaying 4K, HDR and offers an increased field of vision of 110°.

The headset also benefits from vibrations and 3D audio. Not to mention eye tracking and controllers equipped with the same technology as the DualSenses PS5, namely haptic feedback and adaptive triggers. Big arguments therefore, although it is not free from defects. We’ll see what Meta Quest 3 has to offer. We will quickly have the heart net since it is expected this fall, although the precise date has not yet been given for the moment.
