Metabolic Explorer suffers from Chinese competition and energy prices

(AOF) – Metabolic Explorer (Metex) announces 9-month consolidated turnover of 100 million euros, “compared to 184 million euros for a comparable period”. The specialist in industrial fermentation enabling the manufacture of ingredients of natural origin intended for the animal nutrition, cosmetics and biopolymer markets emphasizes that its 3rd quarter “continued to be part of a difficult economic environment marked by the slow economic recovery in China and continued very high sugar and energy prices.

“Chinese production of commodity amino acids not sold on the Asian market is today sold in Europe at very aggressive prices compared to those charged by Metabolic Explorer”, affirms the group, emphasizing that it is the “only European producer by fermentation of amino acids essential for animal nutrition”.

Metex claims that it “can hardly respond to this aggressive pricing policy on the part of Chinese producers”, because it “suffers from a higher cost of access to sugar sold in Europe compared to the world market”. The magnitude of the price gap for this raw material “essential to the fermentation industry is unprecedented” with an increase of more than 80% in France between 2022 and 2023. In addition in 2023, the production costs of group also includes energy access prices which “maintain at a high level after the sharp increase in prices in 2022”. Metex estimates that in 2024, this impact of energy prices “should gradually normalize”.
