While in Switzerland violent thunderstorms, hail and squalls are expected again from Friday, there is a blazing heat in southern Europe. Up to 40 degrees are already being measured in Bosnia and Herzogowina, for example. It looks similar in southern Italy.
But that is probably not the climax of the heat wave. Current forecasts show: In some places the thermometer could even reach 50 degrees. Meteorologist Roger Perret from Meteonews says to Blick: “You really have to assume that in some regions 50 degrees could be measured.” At present, temperature measurements in the region showed a strong upward trend. There is no evidence that this trend will change in the coming days.
Situation is «extreme»
The current situation is «extreme», says Perret. “Such a heat wave is rare, if not unique.” In any case, 2021 has presented itself as a year of extremes: In Switzerland with heavy rain and hail during the entire midsummer, in southern Europe with sweltering heat.
A particular problem is that the high and low pressure areas across Europe are currently hardly shifting. «These areas have been lingering over southern Europe for weeks. From Africa hot air pulls over southern Italy, Greece and Turkey and can hardly escape from there. That’s why it’s so hot, ”explains Perret.
No change in the weather – not even in Switzerland
The local authorities are very concerned about the high temperatures. Large forest fires have already occurred in various locations that are difficult to control. The high temperatures can also lead to heat strokes or even death if you stay outdoors for too long.
Perret rules out that the high pressure area over southern Europe will soon shift towards Switzerland and thus also ensure summer temperatures for us. “According to the current forecasts, the current constellation will last until at least mid-August.” Means: While it is broodingly hot in southern Europe, the weather in Switzerland continues to be mostly cloudy.
