A criminal court in the Netherlands has ruled in the trial surrounding the downing of the passenger plane in 2014.
Three former senior pro-Russian separatists have been sentenced to life imprisonment for murder.
A fourth defendant was acquitted for lack of evidence.
The criminal judges read the verdict in the high-security court at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol in the absence of the accused. The four men are said to be in Russia. It is uncertain whether the three convicts will ever start their sentences.

Malaysia Airlines Boeing MH17 was shot down on July 17, 2014 while en route from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur over a contested area in eastern Ukraine. All 298 people on board were killed. Since most of them came from the Netherlands, the trial also takes place there.
Those convicted are two former Russian intelligence agents and a Ukrainian separatist. In addition to life imprisonment, at least 16 million euros are to be paid to the victims’ relatives.
The court concluded that flight MH17 was brought down by a Buk missile launched from a field in eastern Ukraine, presiding judge Hendrik Steenhuis said. It can be assumed that Russia controlled the People’s Republic of Donetsk at this time.

The Russian Foreign Ministry has announced that it will review the Dutch court’s verdict. The trial has been running since March 2020. Hundreds of relatives of the dead have traveled to the verdict.
