World Cup dominator Max Verstappen will tackle the sprint race at the GP Miami on Saturday from pole position.

Without having to be completely convinced, Max Verstappen created the best possible starting position for the sprint at the start of the race weekend in Miami. “How? I’m first? The lap was terrible,” the Dutchman radioed to the pits after his fastest lap in SQ3.

The “terrible” lap (1:27.641 minutes) was enough for Verstappen to keep the competition at bay, followed by Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc and Verstappen’s Red Bull teammate Sergio Perez.

The Australian Daniel Ricciardo (Racing Bull) caused a surprise with fourth place, followed by Carlos Sainz in the second Ferrari. Sprint qualifying was disappointing for Mercedes: record world champion Lewis Hamilton came 12th, George Russell ended up right in front of him.

Bad prospects for Sauber

The two Sauber drivers also did not reach operating temperature at all. Both Guanyu Zhou and Valtteri Bottas were already stuck in SQ1. The Finn will start the sprint race from position 18, directly behind teammate Zhou.

There are up to 8 championship points to be won in the sprint race later on Saturday afternoon. Qualifying for the GP on Sunday takes place on Saturday evening.
