Michael Caine questions the role of intimacy coordinators on film sets. In the old days they would have “just done the love scene.”

Acting veteran Michael Caine (90) apparently doesn’t think much of so-called intimacy coordinators who are used on film sets for intimate scenes. The 90-year-old Brit, who is currently promoting his film “The Great Escaper”, explained in an interview with the Daily Mail that the concept was foreign to him.

“Really?” Caine answered a question about his opinion of the role. “Seriously? What are they? We didn’t have that in my day. Thank God I’m 90 and don’t play lover anymore. That’s all I can say.” In earlier times, “you would have just done the love scene and gone through with it without anyone interfering. Everything has changed.”

The two-time Oscar winner also says in the interview that he tries to behave in a politically correct manner. But it’s “boring” not being able to express your opinion and not being able to call anyone “darling.” He adds: “I enjoy learning from friends who are younger than me.”

What are Intimacy Coordinators?

Intimacy coordinators were first introduced to Hollywood sets in 2016 by the nonprofit Intimacy Directors International, and are increasingly being hired by production companies in response to the #MeToo movement. On film sets or on stage, they are supposed to ensure that actors and actresses feel comfortable when they have to perform scenes with nudity, sex or intimate physical contact.
