What did Michelle Obama (59) feel when she and her husband Barack Obama (61) had to vacate the White House in Washington for Donald Trump (76) and his wife Melania Trump (52) in January 2017? In her new podcast “The Light Podcast” on Audible the former first lady now describes her feelings in these historic hours for the first time. “That day was so emotional for so many different reasons,” says today’s book author in the first episode “Kids Just Want Our Gladness”.
She had previously lived in the White House for eight years, it was her home and the only real home for her daughters Malia (24) and Sasha (21). “They remembered Chicago, but they’d spent more time in the White House than anywhere else,” Obama said. What also bothered her: Trump’s election and the associated public image. She was upset by the lack of diversity that she noticed on Trump’s stage at his inauguration. It was the opposite of what she and her husband had represented.
“When the doors closed, I cried and sobbed uncontrollably for 30 minutes because we had been like this for eight years very pulled together.” Saying goodbye to White House employees had also been difficult before. Already at this point, feelings rose in her and she had to cry.

Her husband, Barack Obama, was the 44th President of the United States from 2009 to 2017. Due to the two terms he served, the Democrat was not allowed to run for a third time and was replaced by Republican Trump, who prevailed against Hillary Clinton (75). However, after four years, Trump lost his re-election against his Democratic opponent Joe Biden (80), who served as Vice President under Obama.
