Samsung arrives at CES 2023 with two new cutouts for its Micro-LED panels: 50 and 63 inches, bringing the number of diagonals present in the Korean giant’s catalog to seven, including those unveiled during the IFA in Berlin.

A significant step forward in lowering the entry ticket for this technology?

A leap forward or another announcement?

Every year since 2018, Samsung has returned to the charge with its Micro-LED technology. Highly anticipated by technophiles, the latter intends to surpass, by far, existing display technologies on the television market, in particular OLED.

As a reminder, the Micro-LED uses tiny diodes the size of a micrometer to function and form a pixel. Like OLED, these diodes are self-emissive, which means they are able to produce their own light. The big difference is that these are made up of inorganic materials, primarily gallium nitride. The technological advance is immense, because a Micro-LED display would be able to go very high in brightness, display absolute blacks, and above all, enjoy a very long lifespan due to the materials used.

Marketed for individuals since 2021 with 99 and 110 inch models at crazy prices (more than 1,000 euros per inch), the Micro-LED could be accessible in 2023 at more attractive prices. However, for the moment, it is not known if the price per inch will be revised downwards this year, something possible however, since Samsung Display uses a new manufacturing process on TFT substrate to reduce costs and increase its production capacities.

Fixed sizes and invisible demarcation between modules

Until then, Micro-LED displays were delivered in modules with professional assembly and no customization limits. It would seem that Samsung is this time able to deliver fixed-size displays with a completely invisible demarcation between each assembled module.

The year 2023 will therefore be that of an important step forward for Micro-LED, in the sense that Samsung is preparing to market the first Micro-LED televisions that do not require professional installation.
