Specialized in the evaluation of solutions anti-virus, AV-Comparatives has split a table allowing us to measure the effectiveness of the main software available in real conditions of use. Microsoft Defender is not ranked as well as we would like.

Faced with some competing tools, Microsoft Defender does not shine as much as we would like. In a comparative table published by AV-Comparatives, the Microsoft solution, installed by default on Windows, comes well behind the tools of Avast, AVG or Avira. Last year, however, the tool managed to do better.

(Small) road trip for Defender

AV-Comparatives is based on a scenario allowing to mimic real conditions of use in order to estimate the effectiveness of antivirus solutions when the OS is confronted with the Web and its dangers.

As far as Microsoft Defender is concerned, AV-Comparatives’ tests show two false positives this year instead of 0 last year and an actual compromise rate of 1%. The blocking rate is also 99% (figure unchanged from 2021), compared to 100% for the three competing solutions mentioned above. All three have also improved considerably compared to the balance sheet shared last year… while Microsoft Defender has slightly regressed.

Unsuccessful efforts at Microsoft?

As pointed out Neowin, it is surprising to note that Microsoft Defender did significantly less well than last year in the field of false positives. Last March, Microsoft had indeed announced that it was working on these false positives when its tool had mistakenly detected an Office update as being malicious. Obviously, the firm has only made the situation worse, which is quite disconcerting.

For a tool installed by default, and therefore used by hundreds of millions of Windows users around the world, Microsoft should clearly do better. We will see next year, with the next conclusions of AV-Comparatives, if the firm has succeeded in raising the bar… or if, on the contrary, we are at the beginning of a decline of Defender in the face of competing solutions (and often chargeable).

Best antivirus, the 2022 comparison

Recent years have been marked by the massive use of teleworking, cybercrime is doing better than well. We are still, unfortunately, in a situation that makes the use of a complete security suite highly recommended, even essential, in any case under Windows. And it’s against this backdrop that we’ve reviewed the top security suites available on PC to determine the best antivirus for 2022 (September 2022 Update).
