For over two years, some PCs quite capable of running Windows 11 are deprived of the precious update due to a compatibility bug. Microsoft has just fixed the problem.
The switch from Windows 10 to Windows 11 hasn’t exactly been easy for Microsoft and users of its star operating system. Strict specifications which exclude a good number of PCs in circulation, problems with storage media, patches, etc. In short, we have had a more successful migration. Fortunately, more than two years after the release of its new OS, Microsoft has finally corrected one of the most annoying bugs which simply prevented certain PCs from installing the new version of the OS.
A bug with some Intel processors
Be careful, don’t declare victory too soon. This is not a relaxation of the Windows 11 compatibility rules which will allow you to install the OS on your PC, but the very specific correction of a bug which prevented certain machines, although eligible, from ‘install the update.
Indeed, shortly after the release of the system, Intel and Microsoft identified a compatibility problem between certain 11th generation Intel processors and Windows 11. The crux of the problem was in fact in the driver Smart Sound (responsible for voice interactions with the machine) which caused “black screens of death” when installing Windows 11. To avoid any problems, Microsoft had therefore paused the deployment of its new OS on these machines.
At the start of 2024, however, Microsoft has finally tackled this problem and now allows owners of PCs with an 11th generation Intel processor to install Windows 11. Be careful, however, it is not there is no question of doing things anyhow.
How to update your PC properly?
Before forcing your machine to upgrade to Windows 11, you must first install the new Smart Sound drivers available via Windows Update. Once this minor update is installed, Windows 11 can then be deployed on your machine. Microsoft also specifies that the system can take “up to 48 hours» before offering you the update to the new version of the OS once the bug has been corrected.
If even after 48 hours your machine is still not offered the update to Windows 11, Microsoft specifies that this may be due to a “driver problem specific to your machine» and it is therefore necessary to contact the manufacturer to resolve the problem.
