Microsoft: huge layoffs and a canceled game at Xbox and Activision Blizzard

Layoffs are legion in the video game industry, but the bigger the studio, the more they hurt. Today, Microsoft announces the dismissal of 1,900 employees in the branches Xbox And Activision Blizzardwhile the latter has just been officially purchased only three months ago.

As reported The Verge, this is approximately 8% of the workforce Microsoft Gaming who are returnedthe firm had until today around 22,000 employees. Among the licensees, we find in particular Mike Ybarra, president of Blizzard who had already spent 20 years with Microsoftas well as Allen Adham, chief design officer and co-founder of Blizzard. By the way, the survival game made official two years ago is now canceled…Phil Spencer, CEO of Microsoft Gamingexpressed himself in an internal memo:

It’s been a little over three months since the teams from Activision, Blizzard and King joined Microsoft. As we move forward into 2024, leadership at Microsoft Gaming and Activision Blizzard is committed to aligning on a strategy and execution plan with a sustainable cost structure that will support our entire growing business . Together, we set priorities, identified areas of overlap, and ensured we were all aligned on the best growth opportunities.

As part of this process, we have made the painful decision to reduce the size of our playing roster by approximately 1,900 positions from our 22,000-strong team. The game management team and I are committed to following this process as thoughtfully as possible. The people directly impacted by these reductions have all played an important role in the success of Activision Blizzard, ZeniMax, and the Xbox teams, and they should be proud of everything they have accomplished here. We are grateful for all the creativity, passion, and dedication they have brought to our games, our players, and our colleagues. We will provide all support to those affected during the transition, including severance benefits based on local labor laws. Those whose roles are affected will be informed and we ask that you treat your departing colleagues with the respect and compassion that is consistent with our values.

Looking ahead, we will continue to invest in areas that will grow our business and support our strategy to bring more games to more players around the world. While this is a challenging time for our team, I am more confident than ever in your ability to create and maintain the games, stories, and worlds that bring players together.

Microsoft therefore joins the long list of video game studios which have made layoffs since last year. The firm will still continue its operations, you can subscribe to the PC/Xbox Game Pass Ultimate from €13.99 on Amazon, Cdiscount And there Fnac.
