Microsoft integrates ChatGPT with Bing: our handling of this new conversational tool

Expected for the month of March, Microsoft’s new chatbot opens its doors to the most curious through a closed beta. Clubic was able to discover in advance this integration of ChatGPT In Bing.

While ChatGPT has been emulated since December, Microsoft and Google have punctuated this month of February with announcements concerning artificial intelligence and conversational bots with various announcements. If the Mountain View company seems to be charting its own path with its LaMDA model, Microsoft has preferred to invest in OpenAI and integrate ChatGPT into its various services and applications. An addition that Bing is the first to take advantage of.

A different experience than that offered by ChatGPT

Like ChatGPT, the new Bing relies on the GPT model to interpret natural language and generate its responses, but that’s not all. Where OpenAI’s chatbot is based on a “static” knowledge base that extends until 2021, Bing’s tool is more dynamic. He is indeed able to talk about recent events (even going so far as to be able to report facts dating from the same day).

To keep up to date, Bing Chat relies on its indexing engine and Microsoft’s Prometheus model. This allows him in particular to cite his sources and to keep up to date on the latest information published on the Web. The version of GPT it uses is also different. Some consider that it could be version 4 of the language model, including a lot of additional parameters. In fact, the version of GPT used by Bing seems above all to have been greatly modified to better integrate with the search engine and the uses linked to it. To put it simply, ChatGPT is generalist, while Bing Chat is more specialized, with many parameters modified to assist the user in their research.

Get started with the chatbot

For now, this new feature is only accessible from a desktop version of Microsoft Edge. Microsoft has nevertheless confirmed that it is working to bring its tool to the Android and iOS applications of its browser. There are two ways to access Bing Chat:

• A small window to the right or top of a search result;
• A large window that opens when scrolling up from the results page or by clicking on the new “Conversation” tab.

In use, the conversational tool is halfway between ChatGPT and a more traditional chatbot. The experience is intended to be interactive with numbered sources (a bit like a Wikipedia article).

Beyond the simple research and synthesis of information, we can find many uses for it that aim less at the leisure of exchanging and more at practicality. For example, we can ask him to find us a certain model of phone at the best price, or to plan a trip to the Alps by submitting a certain budget. It’s this constant connection to the web that allows Bing Chat to leapfrog ChatGPT and act as a real-time shopping guide.

Like OpenAI’s chatbot, it can also debug and generate code. If we are not developers, writing Clubic, the feedback they have made on it is unequivocal: Bing Chat is doing much better than its counterpart on the subject.

In addition, it is possible to ask it to generate training routines. For example, we asked him for a CrossFit program to improve our time on a specific workout. The AI ​​was even able to nuance the difficulty and avoid the simple “easy, normal, hard” triptych. She proposed levels in between that weren’t just variations in the number of reps or duration of the workout, but changes in its structure and composition.

If the alliance between Microsoft and OpenAI seems to have been made in a few days, the two actually have liabilities that date back to 2019, when the “M” of GAFAM announced to invest 1 billion in the young shoot. After Bing, it is the Office suite that should benefit from these additions, even if the company has not yet communicated on an exit window for these new features.
