Microsoft has announced the general availability of Microsoft Teams 3D Mesh, a mixed reality (MR) feature. Teams 3D Mesh is a feature that allows business users to interact in virtual meetings using avatars. It works with VR headsets such as the Meta Quest.
Microsoft Mesh is available now on the MetaQuest app store.
Teams users can use this tool to organize meetings in immersive spaces and interact with remote colleagues using 3D avatars, just as they would in a physical office.
The fruit of long work
Spatial audio makes it sound like you’re actually talking next to them.
The avatar also detects and reproduces your movements, your gaze, etc.
Microsoft Teams Mesh was previewed three years ago, at a time when the Metaverse was touted as the future of technology (yes, generative AI didn’t exist then). And in fact, Microsoft Mesh was presented as a platform for the metaverse.
Use cases at Accenture and BP
Organizations with a premium Microsoft Teams license can configure a personalized, immersive, and tailored experience. Use the editor to create a set of spaces and add banners with your organization’s logo, product intro videos, presentation content, and more. You can also leverage Unity’s capabilities in the Mesh toolkit to create custom environments for meetings, onboarding, simulations, training, and more.
According to Microsoft, Accenture, Takeda, BP and Mercy Ships currently use Teams Mesh.
Accenture built a virtual campus, OneAccenturePark, using Microsoft Mesh to deliver an onboarding program to 300,000 new employees worldwide. Each new employee rides a virtual monorail to access educational exhibits, expert lectures, meeting spaces, and more.
BP used Microsoft Mesh to create a virtual collaboration environment. BP experts come together in a virtual space called HIVE to perform tasks such as monitoring wind turbines or discussing equipment repairs using digital twins.
Available with Microsoft licenses
To benefit from Teams Mesh functionality, organizations must have a license for Teams Essentials, Microsoft 365 Business Basic, Microsoft 365 Business Standard, Microsoft 365 Business Premium, Microsoft 365 E3 and E5, and Office 365 E1, E3, and E5.
For organizations with such a license, Microsoft offers a six-month trial period.
