Once a month, Microsoft provides its own operating system with a major update. Windows 11 and Windows 10 will once again receive some small but important changes in January 2024. You should install the update on your PC or laptop immediately if you have not already activated automatic Windows updates in your settings. The update ensures, among other things, that your device remains protected and closes any security gaps.

Fixed security issues on Windows 11

The update for Windows 11 is quite unspectacular in terms of new functions, but it fixes some annoying errors. But first things first. First of all, Microsoft is giving the lock screen “dynamic, interactive weather updates” in the coming weeks. You can display further information about the weather situation with just one click on the lock screen or be redirected directly to MSN Weather. You can adjust this function for the lock screen in the settings.

As for the improvements: The update fixes a problem that previously caused your device to shut down after 60 seconds if you logged in to a remote system using a smart card. A display error with the smart card symbol that occurs during login has also been fixed. This error occurred with smart cards with multiple certificates.

A bug that could affect the ActiveX scrollbar is also history with the update (does not work in IE mode). Finally, the update irons out a connection issue with Wi-Fi adapters that use the 802.1x Wi-Fi networks for authentication. This error mainly occurred after installing versions KB5032288 and KB5033375, although rarely on home networks.

The January update also includes the bug fixes that Microsoft already provided with the last update in December. If you missed last month’s update, you’ll get the whole package again with the January patch.

The developers at Microsoft point out that from February 27, 2024 there will no longer be any optional, non-security-related pre-release versions for Windows 11, version 22H2. You will only receive them on Patch Tuesday, every second Tuesday of the month.

Improvements for Windows 10

The above errors related to smart card usage and ActiveX scrollbar are also fixed on Windows 10. The January update for Windows 10 also includes all improvements from the patch from December 2023. Otherwise, the innovations here are rather limited.

If you are not sure which version of Windows you are using, you can easily determine the Windows version and build number.

This is how you install the updates

If you use Windows 10 or Windows 11, you will usually receive the updates automatically. If available, they will be downloaded and installed the next time the system is started – provided you have not deactivated or paused the automated update in Windows.

If you want to check the Microsoft servers yourself for available updates, you can find out how you can install Windows updates manually in the following linked instructions.

Windows Patch Day: Which versions of 8.1, 10 and 11 receive updates?

Windows 10 Home and Pro receive 18 months of support for this version from the release of a new major version. Users of the Enterprise and Education versions, however, 30 months. This means that these systems still receive all important security updates. However, it is recommended to switch to Windows 10 in time. An update to Windows 11 is also possible from here.

Windows 8.1 no longer receives extended support as of January 10, 2023. Patch Tuesday ended for Windows 7 in January 2020. Microsoft no longer provides updates to the operating system for private users. The same fate befell Windows 10 in system version 2004 with the December 2021 patch day. The system version Windows 11 21H2 reached the end of its term with the patch on October 10, 2023.

The easiest way to install a new system update is directly using the Windows Update function. Follow the path “Start” > “Settings” > “Update and Security” > “Windows Update” > “Check for updates”. Since Microsoft rolls out updates in waves, you may not receive a system update until a later date.
