The military programming law arrives this Monday in the Assembly and provides for a historic increase in the defense budget. 413 billion euros will be put on the table between 2024 and 2030 to transform the armies. If the text did not suffer any vote against during the examination in committee, the debates in public session promise to be more tense.
A “politicization of the military thing”. This is what some deputies of the majority expect, reports one of them, while the military programming law arrives this Monday at the National Assembly. Because if the text – which provides for an envelope of 413 billion euros between 2024 and 2030 to transform the armies – did not suffer the slightest vote against during its examination in committee, the debates in public session promise a more muscular tone .
The rebellious parliamentarians oppose, for example, the 13% share of the budget devoted to nuclear deterrence. They also denounce France’s membership of NATO. “But we still don’t know what model of army they want,” wonders, not without skepticism, a Macronist deputy.
Unlikely that LR will call for a vote against
For their part, the Republicans will also try to make their voices heard. The latter are demanding faster use of the credits granted, in particular before 2027 and a possible political alternation. Nevertheless, with a historic increase in the budget, unprecedented since the 1960s, and the context of the war in Ukraine, it is unlikely that the LR group will call for a vote against the text.
The government will therefore hardly need a passage in force but the objective of the majority is to win the support of the opposition to assert a consensus on an important text. This text on which Emmanuel Macron will rely since it is supposed to be symbolically voted on the eve of July 14.
