Minecraft does not intend to give in to NFT madness

Sweden’s Mojang Studios has spoken very clearly about the future of NFTs and blockchain in its Minecraft game. It’s simple: there is none.

Mojang, the Swedish studio behind the world-famous Minecraft, has received feedback from community members asking for clarification and transparency regarding the company’s stance on NFTs (non-fungible tokens) and blockchain. The latter therefore published a press release to explain that, for the moment, there was no question of integrating these technologies into the Minecraft gaming experience.

“While we are in the process of updating our Minecraft usage guidelines to offer more specific guidance on new technologies, we wanted to take the opportunity to share our view that NFT integrations with Minecraft are not something we will take care of”, indicates the document. Mojang clarifies that all players should have access to the same content, and that conversely, NFTs “may create scarcity and exclusion patterns that conflict with our guidelines and the spirit of Minecraft”.

“NFTs create a haves and have-nots scenario”

In concrete terms, to ensure this principle of equality, but also to “a safe and inclusive experience”, blockchain technologies are not allowed to be integrated into the company’s client and server applications. Minecraft game content, such as worlds, skins, personality items or other mods, therefore cannot be used to create a rare digital asset.

Mojang even goes a little further, very clearly denouncing the play-to-earn model. “NFTs don’t include our entire community and create a haves and have-nots scenariois it written. The speculative pricing and investing mentality around NFTs distracts attention from the game and encourages profit making, which we believe is incompatible with the long-term joy and success of our players.”
