Miracle in Syria: a newborn baby still attached to its mother by the umbilical cord emerged alive from the rubble

In the aftermath of the destructive earthquake that shook Turkey and Syria, a newborn baby still connected to its mother by the umbilical cord was pulled out of the rubble.

It’s a miracle that no one dared to believe anymore. Tuesday, February 7, the day after the earthquake that killed more than 22,000 people in Turkey and Syria, a Syrian baby girl born under the rubble was able to get out safe and sound. Her umbilical cord was still connected to her mother, who died in the disaster.. “We found the bodies of the parents next to each other, says Khalil Sawadi, a cousin of the baby’s father, to TF1. We heard a noise while we were digging. We cleared the rubble and found the baby. He had the umbilical cord still connected to his mother.”

A video shared on social media shows a man pulling the baby out of the rubble, his barely severed umbilical cord dangling from his navel. Miraculously healthy, the little girl was taken to Afrin hospital and put in an incubator. “She arrived with her limbs numbed by the cold, her blood pressure had dropped. We gave her first aid and put her on a drip because she had not been breastfed for a long time”, says Dr. Hani Maarouf. According to the physicist, the little miracle was born seven hours after the disaster. Apparently born at term, she weighs 3.175 kg.

At least 11,000 dead in the disaster

On February 6, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake shook Turkey and Syria, destroying everything in its path. According to a latest report established on Friday February 10, at least 22,300 people died in the disaster and thousands of others are still missing, probably buried under the rubble. To find them, the Turkish and Syrian populations continue to redouble their efforts in the hope, no doubt, of a few more miracles.
