14 years after the series finale, “Monk” returns in film form. Stream production is scheduled to start in December 2023, but is Monk’s last case also running in Germany?
- The world has changed in recent years, but has that also been true for Adrian Monk?
- The new film “Mr. Monk’s Last Case: A Monk Movie” answers this question and finally brings the popular series character back.
- Meanwhile, German fans still have to hope for an official start date.
The last episode of “Monk” was released in the USA in 2009, and a year later it was also released in Germany. Since the series came to a complete conclusion after eight seasons, a sequel was not actually expected, but series fans know: Successful series actually always return.
In 2020 there was actually a reunion with Adrian Monk, namely in the 7-minute online special “Mr. Monk Shelters in Place”, which was recorded via Zoom and showed how the characters are coping with isolation during the corona pandemic.
This brief “Monk” reunion and the success of the film sequels to the “Psych” series were enough for the US streaming service Peacock to announce a “Monk” film. Now there is finally initial information about the project.
Really the last case?
In “Mr. Monk’s Last Case: A Monk Movie” Adrian Monk dedicates himself to a new criminal case after a long time in retirement. This is a personal matter because he has to help his stepdaughter Molly, who is preparing for her wedding.
Tony Shalhoub, Ted Levine, Traylor Howard, Jason Gray-Stanford, Melora Hardin and Hector Elizondo are all returning for the “Monk” film, with Caitlin McGee and James Purefoy new.
In the USA, “Mr. Monk’s Last Case: A Monk Movie” will start on Peacock on December 8, 2023, but it is not yet known whether and when the film will also come to Germany.
In principle, it is possible that Sky or Amazon Prime Video will secure the rights to “Mr. Monk’s Last Case: A Monk Movie”, but the last two “Psych” films never made it to Germany. In the worst case scenario, you have to take action yourself and subscribe to Peacock. In order for this to work from Germany, you need a VPN service like CyberGhost.
Even if the title “Mr. Monk’s Last Case: A Monk Movie” suggests a final conclusion: another return of Monk is not ruled out. First of all, the Peacock film has to prove that there is still enough interest in the character after all these years.
