At least the first “Moon Knight” episode on Disney+ is all about museum employee Steven Grant. That should surprise comic fans, after all Marc Spector is the main character and Steven, one of his other identities, has a completely different profession.

Marc Spector will also play a larger role in the course of the series, but it cannot be assumed that Disney + will stick particularly closely to the comic template. Netzwelt has summarized the origin story of Moon Knight from the comics for you.

Who is Marc Spector in the comics?

Marc Spector’s family fled Germany in the 1930s to start a new life in the United States. He lacked for nothing and yet Marc later decided not to study but to become a heavyweight boxer.

Shortly thereafter, he decided to join the Navy and later joined the CIA. There he worked with William Cross, who murdered his girlfriend Lisa in cold blood. Marc then became a mercenary under the command of Raoul Bushman.

On a mission in Egypt, however, Raoul went too far and killed an innocent man who was investigating a ditch with his daughter Marlene Alraune. Marc is critically injured in a fight between Marc and Bushman.

Near death, he is found by some Egyptians who take him to the temple of the moon god Khonshu. On the brink of death, Khonshu makes him an offer that he will give his life if Marc agrees to become his avatar.

Thus, Marc Spector received the blessing of the moon god and thus superhuman powers, depending on the phases of the moon. He is blessed with agility, reflexes and strength that a normal human does not possess. Due to his time at the CIA, he is also an excellent opponent in close combat and can drain their life energy from enemy contact.

After his return to America, Marc Spector developed other personalities besides Moon Knight. So he created financier Steve Grant and cab driver Jake Lockley. Moon Knight is constantly in an existential crisis, because none of his personalities know about the others.

Notes and Differences

Many fans are sure that Raoul Bushman has to appear in “Moon Knight” in any case, since he is one of the most well-known antagonists from the comics and made sure that Marc had to make a deal with Khonshu in the first place.

In addition, it is quite possible that we can expect another identity from Marc with Jake Lockley. In the comics, Marc’s alter egos were only secret identities at first, only later did the authors change the story and give Marc an identity disorder.

Marvel always takes great liberties when introducing new heroes, and so “Moon Knight” fans should also expect not to experience many characters and events from the comics at all or in a heavily adapted form in the series.

At least the superheroine’s abilities were also changed in the Marvel series “Ms. Marvel”, which starts at Disney+ in early June 2022. As always, such adjustments can be explained with MCU boss Kevin Feige’s master plan, which is opaque to outsiders. With each new project, the future of Marvel becomes clearer and the next big highlight draws closer!
