The Dutch national airline KLM is currently revising the dress code rules for cabin crew. KLM is following airlines like United and Play, which have recently relaxed their rules.
Some airlines have rigorously revised the rules. All United cabin crew are now allowed to wear makeup or nail polish. Play has also radically rethought the dress code. Their uniforms are not gender specific. Each crew member can flexibly combine clothing and accessories.
KLM doesn’t want to go that far. But the Dutch national airline is also currently revising the dress code. “Diversity and integration are important issues for us. That’s why we’re examining how the uniform regulations can be adjusted,” confirms a spokeswoman.

“We want to give our colleagues more space to be themselves in the uniform, whoever they are2,” said the spokeswoman. Details have not yet been decided. But at KLM, more hairstyles and small tattoos are being discussed or nail polish for everyone, but you want to take into account that KLM has a different image and audience than other airlines such as the low-cost airline Play.
The softening of the dress code could also be an advantage in the job market. After the easing, Virgin Atlantic received twice as many applications as before.
