More than 30 percent by 2022
E-cars are catching up with new registrations
Those who buy a new car are increasingly opting for an electric car or at least a plug-in hybrid. In the coming year, their number could already exceed the 30 percent mark. This is the result of a study.
According to a study, the market for electromobility is gaining momentum in Germany: The experts from the management consultancy EY expect an electrical market share of 32 percent of all new registrations for the coming year, as reported by “Welt am Sonntag”. This corresponds to 1.18 million new electric cars including plug-in hybrids.
In 2030, according to the forecast, two thirds of the market for new registrations will be dominated by electric car manufacturers. However, the study only refers to new registrations, which make up a small proportion of the total number of cars registered in Germany. A total of around 48 million cars are currently registered in the Federal Republic of Germany.
According to EY consultants, however, the attitude of Germans towards e-car technology is also changing. A representative survey conducted as part of the “Mobility Consumer Index” showed that two out of five Germans planning to buy a new car are considering buying an electric car, at least a hybrid. In other surveys, this value was recently significantly lower.
Considerable pent-up demand
Most recently, a government commission came to the conclusion that the electrification of road traffic must gain momentum significantly in the coming years. “Despite considerable technical advances, the transport sector has not been able to reduce CO2 emissions in recent years,” says the final report of the National Platform for the Future of Mobility (NPM). “The need to act is more urgent than ever, because the volume of traffic continues to grow, especially in freight transport, while the climate protection targets are being tightened at the same time.”
According to the expert panel, up to 14 million electric vehicles will have to be on the road in Germany by 2030 in order to make a sufficient contribution to the implementation of the tightened climate targets in transport in June. The previous planning horizon for the automotive industry would have been seven to ten million e-cars in 2030.
