More than 40 million customers in just five years: This handyman has the hang of it

Nintendo owes its reputation as a video game great to just one thing: Super Mario. The little (ex-)plumber was and is Nintendo’s guarantee of success; without the franchise, the Japanese company would not be what it is today. And the Nintendo Switch would not be as successful without the little jack-of-all-trades with Italian roots.

Originally, according to its creator, Shigeru, Mario was Miyamotonot even a plumber, but embodied a kind of “carpenter” in Donkey Kong from 1981, because the game takes place on a construction site. Only with Mario Bros, where the little guy acts underground a lot and a lot of pipes are in use, did the Mario makers decide to make him a plumber. To date, the 1985 classic Super Mario Bros. starring Mario as the plumber has sold around 40.24 million copies worldwide. In the meantime, Nintendo has worked on the profile of the well-versed plumber and turned him into a sporty, extra-cool all-rounder.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe: Fuel for the Nintendo Switch

Super Mario Bros. has long been the best-selling Super Mario game of all time. But now Mario Kart 8 Deluxe for the switch has taken over the top position by a clear margin (see Statista chart). In the five years since its release, the racing game originally developed for Nintendo’s predecessor, the Wii U sold over 43 million copies and is now the franchise’s new bestseller. The fun racer is one of two switch games in the top 8 of the Super Mario saga.

This shows that success can also be achieved with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe along with the Nintendo Switch.
