Morocco: stuck in a well, a 5-year-old child arouses a national stir

Lhe fate of a 5-year-old boy, stuck in a deep well for more than thirty-six hours, has Morocco spellbound. Dispatched to the spot, in Chefchaouen (north), the rescuers tried to save him by digging contiguous ground. Rayan accidentally fell on Tuesday 1er February in the evening, at the bottom of a dry well 32 meters deep, narrow and difficult to access, dug near the family residence, not far from Bab Berred.

“In a moment of inattention, the little one fell into the well that I was repairing. I couldn’t sleep a wink all night,” Rayan’s father told Le360. Rescuers were able to deliver water and oxygen through tubes to Rayan, according to the MAP news agency. Five diggers deployed on site began digging land parallel to the well. The excavation works reached a depth of more than 19 meters.

“The heart of all Moroccans is with this angel”

Mobilized for more than twenty-four hours, the rescue teams could not descend directly into the well, because its diameter does not exceed 45 centimeters. The accident sparked a stir on social media. The hashtag #sauvezrayan (in Arabic) is among the top Twitter trends on Thursday. “The hearts of all Moroccans are with this angel,” wrote a surfer on Twitter.
