UEFA penalty hits FC Bayern “very hard”

It is still unclear where FC Bayern Munich will go in the Champions League quarter-finals. But one thing is clear: the Bundesliga club will not sell tickets to their own supporters for the away game.

FC Bayern Munich will not protest against the exclusion of its fans from the next Champions League away game. The Munich team therefore accepted a penalty from the European Football Union (UEFA), as they announced.

After some Bayern supporters set off pyrotechnics and threw objects in the round of 16 at Lazio Rome once again in this premier class season, Bayern were given this penalty. FC Bayern had previously received a suspended sentence from UEFA because pyrotechnics had already been set off during the away game in Copenhagen in the group phase. Now the probation has been revoked. FC Bayern lost the game in Rome 0-1, but managed to survive the round of 16 with a 3-0 win in the second leg.

“A small group of individual perpetrators has done a disservice to all of our supporters and the team,” said Bayern CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen. The German record champions will not be issuing any tickets to their fans for the away game of the quarter-finals, which will be drawn on Friday.

“We have to accept the punishment. Not only were pyrotechnics set off in the stands, but also targeted shots were fired onto the lawn, which directly endangered those who were not involved. This violated the probation conditions so explicitly that an objection is unfortunately pointless,” said Dreesen . “The fact that we now have to do without the support of our own fans away from home hits us very hard.” But he is “confident that our team will find a way to still deliver the top performance that will be necessary in the quarter-finals.”
