Timo Meier has achieved something sensational in the NHL: in San Jose’s 6-2 win over Los Angeles, the Appenzeller put together a five-pack.
On Tuesday night, a Swiss made history in the best ice hockey league in the world. 25-year-old Timo Meier became the first player in the 31-year history of the San Jose Sharks to score 5 goals in a game. With Patrik Laine and Mika Zibanejad only 2 other active NHL players have managed this feat. In this millennium, only 5 players managed a five-pack in a game.
Meier already scored a hat trick in the first period, followed by a brace in the middle period. His hit on the crossbar to make it 5:1 was an eye-catcher. In the record goal for 6: 1 in the 40th minute, the striker skilfully delayed and then sank ice cold. The last time an NHL player scored 5 goals in 40 minutes was in 1994.
Meier now has 45 scorer points (20 goals) in 34 games. His record – which is also the Swiss NHL record – is 66 points in 78 qualifying games (in the 2018/19 season). So it’s quite possible that the Appenzeller will pulverize this value.
Also meet Moser and Fiala
Janis Moser and Kevin Fiala were also successful in front of goal: Moser scored in Arizona’s 5-2 win against Montreal to make it 3-1, Fiala made it 2-1 against Colorado, but had to leave the ice with Minnesota as losers (3:4nP).
Roman Josi was credited with another assist point. In the 16th minute of the 5-3 defeat of his Nashville Predators at the St. Louis Blues, the Swiss captain set up Filip Forsberg’s 2-0 lead. After his 27th assist, Josi now has 40 points from 38 games.
Detroit’s Pius Suter (3:2 nV against Buffalo) and Chicago’s Philipp Kurashev (2:3 nP against Seattle) remained without a scorer point.
