MotoGP: Fabio Quartararo wins in Portugal ahead of Johann Zarco and takes the reins of the general classification

Doubled French in Portimao. Fabio Quartararo won the MotoGP Grand Prix of Portugal on Sunday ahead of his compatriot Johann Zarco. The Frenchman, reigning world champion, takes the lead in the general classification on equal points with Alex Rins.

The Niçois dominated the race head and shoulders, finishing more than 5 seconds ahead of Zarco, who started from pole position. The latter took advantage of the clash between the Spaniard Joan Mir (Suzuki) and the Australian Jack Miller (Ducati) while the three drivers were fighting for 2nd place.

The reigning world champion thus won his first victory in MotoGP since the British Grand Prix last August. He now has 69 championship points after four races, like Rins.

“I pushed myself to the limit, declared Fabio Quartararo. I had a great start and I’m happy to win for the first time this season.”

“It’s a great French victory but unfortunately it’s not mine,” said Johann Zarco, who started from pole position. The two Frenchmen had already achieved a double in this order at the Doha Grand Prix a year ago.
