The government, which has definitively validated the implementation of technical control for two-wheelers from the beginning of 2024, is waving the carrot of aid up to 6,000 euros to calm motorcyclists. Sufficient ?

It did not escape you, the motorcycle technical control – which responds to a European directive of April 3, 2014 – will be effective at the beginning of the year 2024, after many summons from the Council of State. The Minister of Transport, Clément Beaune, immediately announced the creation of aid for conversion to electric. Dates, prices, aid, two-wheelers concerned: Clubic explains everything to you, point by point.

When will the technical control become really compulsory?

The technical inspection of two-wheelers will become compulsory at the ” beginning of the year 2024 “. We do not yet know if it will be from the 1er January, or a little later. In any case, the government no longer ignored the Council of State. The highest French administrative court had, at the beginning of June, given two months to the executive to establish the technical control of motorized two-wheelers. This time the decision was made.

There are two important things to know about the periodicity of the control:

  • The first technical control will have to intervene at the time of the five years of the machine.
  • Then, the TC must be renewed every three years.

At what price?

The motorcyclists, who already have quite significant expenses and constraints (insurance, petrol, traditional revisions, small breakdowns, traffic regulations), railed virulently against the establishment of this technical control, of which they feared the price. The government has thus promised control that is “ the cheapest and simplest possible “.

The state wants it to cost around 50 euros. Discussions are thus held with the control centers, which will themselves have to make heavy investments to equip themselves and adapt their equipment to two-wheelers. In other countries of the European Union, the tariff is comparable to that hoped for by France.

What types of motorcycles will be affected?

The question remains unclear, but we know the will of the government: to impose the technical control to less than 125 cm3which present a greater accidentology, and at over 125 cm3 also, without forgetting the three-wheelers, of course. Motorcycles exclusively intended for sporting use should be excluded from the scope.

For which control points?

Compared to cars, checkpoints should be four times fewer on two-wheelers. The price will not be divided by four of course, but let’s move on. In the meantime, the technical control should focus on the safety elements of motorcycles, with a measurement of polluting noise emissions. A very brief check-up, in theory already carried out at dealerships and traditional two-wheeler garages.

What is this help that the government wants to offer to bikers?

Clément Beaune presented, with our colleagues from Raw on Twitter, a measure intended to pass the pill to the most refractory motorcyclists to technical control. Early next year, a ” conversion bonus for two-wheelers will be put in place, on the same model as aid for the purchase of a hybrid car or an electric bicycle.

It should start at 1,100 euros and climb up to 6,000 euros in the event that you swap your two-wheeler (regardless of its engine size) for another, provided that it is an electric model or a much less polluting one. There will obviously be resource conditions. Only households whose reference tax income is less than 14,089 euros will be eligible. Note, finally, that this aid will only target two-wheelers over 11 kilowatts. There you go, you know everything.
