Surprise ! It’s not one, but two folding smartphones announced today by Motorola. The Razr 40 and Razr 40 Ultra have serious arguments to make, such as an initial selling price of less than 900 euros for the entry level. A first in this growing segment.

Finally a folding smartphone for less than 900 €

The Razr 40 “just short” is an entry-level figure while retaining more than interesting characteristics. Its folding screen consists of a 6.9 ” pOLED panel displaying 1080 × 2640 pixels (maximum refresh rate of 144 Hz).

The external screen is much less ambitious: housed next to the back camera, it features a 1.5 ” OLED panel. It will mainly be used to display some information when the device is folded.

Motorola opted for a Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 SoC, 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of non-expandable storage. Power is supplied by a 4200 mAh battery. It can be recharged by wire using the supplied 30 watt mains adapter or by induction (5 watts, Qi compatible).

The front camera, housed in a punch of the screen, has a 32 Mpxl sensor and a lens opening at f / 2.45. Its dorsal alter ego has two modules, most of whose specifications remain mysterious: 64 Mpxl, f / 1.79 for the main one; 13 Mpxl, f / 2.2 for the ultra-wide-angle. Go make up your mind with this…

The Razr 40 has an IP52 certification and will therefore resist dust and water drops. It is available in Sage Green, Grape and Cream Beige at the retail price of €899 including tax and will be available from the end of June.

It comes with a transparent protective shell while its packaging offers a unique “olfactory experience”…

Razr 40 Ultra: two screens and more power

The Ultra version of the Razr 40 is a (big) notch above in terms of technical specifications. Not at the level of the folding screen, which retains the same specifications as that of its little brother.

This is not the case with the external screen, built around a 3.6 ” OLED panel and covering almost the entire front face. This displays 1056 × 1066 pixels… or almost, since it is amputated by three circular perforations: two for the lenses, one for the flash.

Motorola claims to have adapted the software part so that it fully exploits this impressive screen. In addition to the traditional essential shortcuts, you can run most Android applications on the device.

We are curious to test this possibility, so far offered to users of much larger smartphones like the Samsung Fold4…

The Razr 40 Ultra features a Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC, 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of non-expandable storage. Surprisingly, its battery tops out at 3,800 mAh (compared to 4,200 mAh for the Razr 40). No change, however, for fast charging (30 watts) and induction (5 watts).

The front camera, housed in a hole in the internal screen, is identical to that of the Razr 40. The main camera consists of two modules.

The main module benefits from a sensor whose photosites are much less numerous (12 Mpxl against 64 Mpxl) and larger than those of the Razr 40 (1.4 μm against 0.7 μm).

Still as lacking in technical information, Motorola still announces that its lens opens at f/1.5. No change for the ultra-wide-angle, identical to that of the Razr 40.

Motorola finally specifies that the Razr 40 and the 40 Ultra benefit from a “flexible position hinge”. Called Flex View, it allows hands-free use, the smartphone being placed on a flat surface. Ideal for filming, taking photos or making a timelapse, therefore.

The Razr 40 ultra is available in black, glacier blue and Viva Magenta (pinkish red) at the retail price of €1,199 including tax. It comes with a transparent cover and the same “olfactory experience” as the Razr 40…

From June 1 to July 16, any purchaser of the Razr 40 Ultra will be able to receive a Lenovo Tab11 Plus tablet as a gift worth 279 euros. To benefit from it, you will have to register on the dedicated site.
