Motorola resurrects the concept of the “smartphone-wristband”

Invested among the first in the market for smartphones with folding screens, Motorola multiplies the technical demonstrations during the tech events which punctuate the year. Its parent brand Lenovo, which organizes its Tech World event every year, intended to publicize its latest innovations, is taking advantage of its 2023 edition to unveil a new concept branded Motorola: that of a smartphone capable of wrapping around the wrist.

Does the idea resonate in your ears? This is normal, since Lenovo, then newly owner of Motorola (acquired in 2014 from Google), unveiled, at Tech World 2016, its first concept of its kind: a massive model, which was not entirely functional, and which was part of the trend at the time to try to transform the smartphone into wearable. A few years later, and while flexible OLED screens have become common, it is Motorola’s turn to demonstrate its concept.

The videos published by Lenovo show that a smartphone equipped with a 6.9-inch pOled screen, with a very stretched ratio, reminiscent of that of a Razr 40 Ultra. More than wrapping around the wrist, the concept phone “pinches” around; and if Motorola does not specify it, the video published about it shows that to attach it to the wrist, it is necessary to wear a bracelet, probably made of metal. The smartphone, whose back is covered in seemingly padded fabric, therefore appears magnetic to this support. Once attached, it only uses the equivalent of a 4.6-inch screen, offering the equivalent, in terms of experience at least, of an external Razr screen. THE concept phone can further be used in tent mode, like a classic folding smartphone, and even paired with AI-generated wallpapers that match the user’s outfit.

It’s difficult to imagine yourself with such a device on your wrist, but Motorola is continuing here its technical demonstration project initiated at the beginning of the year, at the MWC in Barcelona, with its “Rizr”: it was then a concept of a rollable smartphone whose format could vary depending on needs. We can bet that the next Catalan show will also host a concept in an original format, demonstrating the brand’s investments in R&D.
