Mourning the loss of Michael “Virgil” Jones. The wrestling icon of the 1980s died on Wednesday after a long history of suffering. He was only 61.

The wrestling world mourns the loss of Michael “Virgil” Jones (1962-2024). The former WWF star died on Wednesday at the age of just 61, according to wrestling referee Mark Charles III. on behalf of the family of the deceased announced on Facebook. On Virgil’s official Instagram profile is the sad news has been confirmed in the meantime.

The long story of suffering of ex-wrestler Virgil

“Dear friends, it is with great sadness that I bring the news to the Jones family of the passing of our beloved Michael Jones, who we knew and loved as Virgil, Vincent, Soul Train Jones and more,” Charles III’s Facebook post read. Virgil “died peacefully in hospital” on Wednesday morning (local time).

Virgil debuted as a professional wrestler in 1986 in what was then known as the World Wrestling Federation (WWF), now known as WWE. At first he acted as bodyguard for the “Million Dollar Man” Ted DiBiase, 70. But later the giant turned against his boss and defeated him in the ring. He left the WWE in 1994 and ended his career in 2000 due to injuries.

According to the British BBC The ex-wrestler’s health has increasingly deteriorated in recent years. He developed colon cancer and dementia, and suffered a series of strokes. Companions remembered the deceased on social networks. “I am shocked and saddened by the news of Virgil. Rest in peace, my friend,” wrote former wrestling star Jake “The Snake” Roberts, 68, on X (formerly Twitter).
