Klitschko: You get used to death

While many Europeans are planning their vacation in the summer, this is currently not possible in the Ukraine. Former boxing champion Klitschko speaks in Chemnitz about the changed everyday life of his compatriots.
Former Ukrainian boxing world champion Wladimir Klitschko described his feelings in moving words at a forum on the Ukraine war in Chemnitz. “Every day, every night, Ukrainians die, not only soldiers, but also civilians, women, children. You get used to the pictures (…) You get used to seeing death and live on,” said the 47- year olds at a readers’ forum of the Chemnitz “Freie Presse”.
You also get used to explosions. February 24, 2022 completely changed the lives of people in Ukraine. Right now, in the summer, plans are being made for the holidays, for life. Ukrainians couldn’t do it that way: “They think from day to day.” On February 24, 2022, Russian troops invaded the neighboring country. Since then, Ukraine has been defending itself against the Russian war of aggression.
Klitschko didn’t want to venture a forecast as to when the war would end. It could end very quickly, but it could also take a long time. Nobody can know. “Critical times shape a strong nation and character (…). We want to live in peace, in a democracy, not in a dictatorship,” said the athlete, whose brother Vitali is the mayor of Kiev.
Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock defended the military aid for the country attacked by Russia at the forum in front of almost 300 readers. Nobody in the world looks at this war without emotion. Many had doubts as to whether military aid was the right thing to do. Without tanks and anti-aircraft defenses, there would have been even more casualties. More military support is needed. They can only be hired when the Russian President stops bombing Ukraine and abducting and raping people. This happens every day in the areas that have not yet been liberated. There is murder, torture and rape every day.
