New success on Prime Video, the series Mr & Mrs Smith with Donald Glover and Maya Erskine knew how to fascinate its audience until its explosive finale. Enough to open the door to a season 2?
Twenty years after Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, a new duo has slipped into the shoes of John and Jane Smith for a series remake of Doug Liman’s film. Available on Prime Video, the series Mr & Mrs Smith is already a success since it is number 1 in the top of the platform.
The eight episodes of the fiction carried by Donald Glover and Maya Erskine tell the tribulations of a couple of spies united for better and for worse by a mysterious agency which offers them a luxurious life in exchange for risky missions to carry out for their account.
But their cover story becomes even more complex when they have real feelings for each other. Which is riskier: espionage or marriage? This dissection of the couple against a backdrop of action and dark humor pleased subscribers who are already begging for a second season.
Will there be a second season of Mr & Mrs Smith?
Although Mr & Mrs Smith is a success on Prime Video, there is currently no indication that a season 2 is possible. Especially since the co-creator of the series, Francesca Sloane, explained to Hollywood Reporter that the series was designed for one season:
“We wanted to make sure it was seen as a complete story, even though the ending is what it is. We watched a lot of movies from the ’70s. I like the way a lot of movies end, like The Graduate , which has those kinds of satisfying endings without giving all the answers. We feel like there’s a great, complete story here in that sense.”

The surprising ending to the first season of Mr & Mrs Smith can indeed be seen as a definitive conclusion, even if it leaves it up to the audience to determine the meaning and does not close the door to a sequel, with the same John and Jane Smith or with other performers.
Besides, Francesca Sloane is not closing the door to a sequel. Discussions are even underway! “We’ve definitely already started discussing ideas for season 2… assuming that’s possible.”she explains, “We would never want to do a season 2 if we couldn’t do better than the first season. So it really depends. We’ll see what life throws at us, but we definitely have some exciting ideas.”.
It remains to be seen whether the Mr & Mrs Smith team will want to provide real answers at the end of the first season and bring back Donald Glover and Maya Erskine or if they will move towards the anthology solution and follow a cut by John and Jane Smith different each season.
