Much more horsepower and kg – BMW M4: Slightly overweight, fast and precise

With the last generation of the M4, BMW turned back the weight spiral – the current sports coupé has now more than compensated for this cure. The new BMW weighs around 200 kilograms more than the previous version’s BMW M4 (when it was launched in 2014), but the competition version also has a powerful 510 hp, 60 hp more than before. “Krone” engine editor Stephan Schätzl took the strikingly painted Munich man out to dance on the Wachauring. His driving report here in the video!

Anyone who says the new one weighs only 130 kg more than the old one is not wrong either, because the BMW M4 F82 has grown quite a bit in the course of its construction period, in the end it was (measured according to DIN, i.e. without driver) 1570 kg with manual Transmission and 1595 kg with seven-speed dual clutch transmission. Originally the M4 Competition only weighed 1497 or 1537 kg, the current one weighs 1725 kg.

The BMW M4 Competition has an eight-speed automatic converter as standard. But there is also a manual six-speed gearbox on offer, but only for the 30 hp weaker standard variant. But 480 hp mean an increase in performance of 49 hp compared to its predecessor.

The power of the three-liter twin-turbo six-cylinder (at least 650 Nm from 2750 rpm) in the test car is transferred to the rear axle as usual and ensures a standard sprint value of 3.9 seconds. With all-wheel drive (available from summer) the value drops to 3.5 seconds, despite another 50 kg more.

The BMW M4 is in the price list at 105,600 euros, the test car costs 142,187 euros.

Fahrzit
Despite its extra weight, the BMW M4 Competition is an excellent sports coupé that every driver can adjust to their needs thanks to electronically controlled dampers and many setting options. And those who feel overwhelmed by 510 hp on the rear axle can also order all-wheel drive in the future.

Why?
Excellent connection to the road
Strong engine
