“Multidimensional training”: USA and South Korea hold military exercise

“Multidimensional Training”
USA and South Korea hold military exercises

The USA and South Korea feel threatened by North Korea, which repeatedly carries out weapons tests. To deter Pyongyang, the militaries of both countries will hold an eleven-day joint exercise in March. The training should cover many areas.

The US and South Korean militaries will hold their joint spring exercises in March to deter the military threat from North Korea. A core part of the annual Freedom Shield training will also be defense against nuclear threats from North Korea, the General Staff of the South Korean Armed Forces said.

The USA and its allies South Korea and Japan see themselves as directly threatened by the nuclear weapons and missile programs of the country, which is largely internationally isolated. According to the information, “Freedom Shield” begins next Monday and lasts eleven days. The militaries of both countries described it as multidimensional defense training that, in addition to land, sea and air, also includes cyber and information space as well as outer space as possible battlefields.

The aim is to “strengthen common defense and improve response capacities against a spectrum of security threats,” it said. The maneuver includes, among other things, computer simulations and numerous exercises in the field. In the past, North Korea has repeatedly threatened to take tough countermeasures against military exercises by the USA and South Korea.

Washington and Seoul reject all allegations by Pyongyang that the maneuvers are used to prepare an attack. Tensions on the Korean peninsula have escalated significantly in the past two years. In response to North Korea’s numerous tests of nuclear-capable rockets and guided missiles, South Korea and the United States further expanded military cooperation.
