Barbara Sukowa has played in more than 60 film and television roles and has received numerous awards. Now she is being honored with the CineMerit Award at the Munich Film Festival.

The Munich Film Festival is celebrating its 40th birthday this year. Actress Barbara Sukowa will receive the CineMerit Award.

Actress Barbara Sukowa (73) receives the CineMerit Prize 2023 at the Munich Film Festival. Outstanding filmmakers have been honored with the award since 1997. In recent years, the award has mainly gone to international stars. The film festival will open on June 23 with the film “The Persian Version”.

“Beyond the Mainstream”

A press release from the organizer says that Sukowa’s career is “an example of the fact that there are diverse roles and relevant stories beyond the mainstream”. The trained actress became a German film star in the early 1980s with the Fassbinder films “Berlin Alexanderplatz” and “Lola”. Her new film “Dalíland” will be shown in Munich. In it, the Bremen native embodied Salvador Dalí’s (1904-1989) wife Gala Éluard (1894-1982). Her older films “Rosa Luxemburg” (1986) and “We Both” (2019) are also showing.

With the CineMerit Award, the Munich Film Festival has been honoring outstanding personalities in international filmmaking for their services to the art of film since 1997. Previous recipients include Alba Rohrwacher (2022), Senta Berger and Robin Wright (2021), Ralph Fiennes and Antonio Banderas (2019), and Emma Thompson (2018).

Culture clash comedy to kick off

The Munich Film Festival will open with the culture clash comedy “The Persian Version”. The opening film follows Leila and her Iranian parents who emigrated to the United States in the 1970s. The director and the two leading actresses are also expected to attend the performance.

The Munich Film Festival takes place from June 23rd to July 1st. Other highlights of the 40th birthday edition: The Austrian director Jessica Hausner (50) will be represented in a retrospective with her new feature film “Club Zero”. In cooperation with the Museum Brandhorst there is a homage to the Taiwanese artist Shu Lea Cheang (69). Their new production “UKI” will be shown as a world premiere.
