IS fighters flee prison after earthquake

IS fighters are taking advantage of the chaos after the earthquake in the Turkish-Syrian border region and instigating a mutiny in a military prison. Around 20 inmates escape from the detention center, in all likelihood all members of the Islamist terrorist organization.

After the severe earthquake in the Turkish-Syrian border area, 20 suspected militants of the terrorist organization Islamic State escaped from a prison mutiny in Syria. The AFP news agency learned this on Monday evening from the Rajo military prison near the Turkish border. After the earthquake, which also affected Rajo, the prisoners started an uprising and took control of parts of the prison.

Around 20 inmates fled during the mutiny, it said. “We believe that they are IS fighters.” Around 2,000 prisoners are being held in the Rajo military prison, around 1,300 of whom are suspected IS fighters. Kurdish fighters are also being held there.

The 7.8 magnitude earthquake shook the Turkish-Syrian border area early in the morning. More than 4,200 people were killed, including more than 1,400 in Syria. On Tuesday night, a feverish search was made for survivors everywhere. The number of victims threatens to rise further.
